This Month's Walk

Doom Creek Gorge

Doom Creek Gorge

Devil’s Creek Hut – Thursday 28th April 2022

We plan a walk part of the Wakamarina Track from Butchers Flat Car park to Devil’s Creek Hut, The intention is to have two separate groups to accommodate as many members as possible. The groups will travel together to the road end carpark up the Wakamarina Valley.

  1. Devil’s Creek Hut Grade 2/3: 4-5 hours hours return (including lunch) – 12.4kms. We depart Butchers Flat campsite and we walk along a well formed benched track that drops down to an impressive bridge crossing the narrow rocky gorge of Doom Creek and then climbs back up above the true right of the river to a benched track that sidles around the hillside through regenerating bush and kanaka and crossing unbridged side streams and passing through mature forest to the Devil’s Creek Hut, which is located in a grassy clearing on a terrace above the true right of Wakamarina River.
  2. Doom Walk Grade 2: approx. 2-3 hours return including a lunch stop. (4.4kms). This wide, benched and historically significant tramping track leaves the main track near Doom Creek. It follows the old water race which delivered water from Foster and Doom Creeks to the quartz crushing battery of the Golden Bar Claim at Deep Creek. Doom, or Dome Creek as it was originally known (from the appearance of the boulders and hills in the area), was very rich in gold. Extensive works were carried out in both branches, although the immense boulders deterred most miners from settling there permanently. The junction of Doom Creek and the Wakamarina River was known as the Forks and the terrace above the bridge was the site of a small settlement. Little evidence of it remains today, except for isolated stacks of rocks.

Please bring: lunch and water together with robust footwear/boots and poles, sun screen & additional warm clothing as necessary.
